I’m not doing so well at this “scrimping & saving” thing.

But at least I’m getting cool stuff in my moments of weakness.

Yes, it’s another “what did I buy today?” topic. So, what did I buy today?

This:

What the heck is that? It’s the Philips DVP-320 DVD player. In this case ‘DVD player” is a bit of a misnomer, since it’ll play damn near anything you can get on a disc. Let’s take a look at the list, shall we?

Movies: DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD Music: CD. MP3-CD, CD-R, CD-RW Pictures: Picture CD (JPEG) with music (MP3) What won’t it play? I don’t know. Hell, I don’t even have most of the stuff it will play! It’s a cool little unit, not quite a foot on each side and less than 2″ thick. It weighs less than 2 pounds, so it’ll be easy enough to take with me when I finally leave Korea. Want the rest of the specs? No? Well, here they are anyways – universal voltage, plays PAL and NTSC, composite and component out (no S-vid though), analog and digital (coaxial) audio out, and on-screen menus. The best part is that’s it’s hackable to play all DVD regions. I’ve already tested it out with regions 0,1 and 3 and they all work great.

Now, if I’m trying to save money, why’d I buy a DVD player? For one thing, my PS2 won’t play anything but region 1 DVDs, and I haven’t used it for games in longer than I can remember. So it’s going to get sold. Two, I was planning on getting a region-free player to take its place once I sold it, so I was kind of in the market for one. Three, it was a good deal – only $116. Cheaper than any of the players I’d been looking at online. Plus, I bought it at a store right down the street, so if anything should go wrong, it’s easier to deal with then if I’d bought one online and had it shipped to Korea.

But that’s all just a bunch of justifications for spending the money. I wanted it and I bought it. Now, if I could just stop finding stuff I can justify buying!
