Hoarding

No, there’s not a war brewing over here. (Not that I know of, anyways.)

Have you ever found a product you really like, then it goes off the market and you can’t get it anymore? Don’t you hate that? I remember using Aim mint gel toothpaste. That stuff was great! Then one day it just went away. No more. Time to find something different. It seems like every time I find some product like that – toothpaste, shaving cream, laundry detergent, peanut butter, whatever – it just goes away without warning. Now, I understand companies don’t stay in business forever, and I can accept that. But it seems to happen with every product I find that I really, really like. Especially shoes. You know how it is when you find the perfect pair of shoes and you want to wear them for the rest of your life? Only you can’t, because trends change, styles change and the shoes you like aren’t around anymore when the pair you love wears out and you want to get another pair exactly like them. I was worried about my ninja shoes since the soles are getting worn down. As long as it took me to find them, and as comfortable as they are, I don’t want to have to give them up anytime soon. When I was in Seoul yesterday I went to the Nike shop where I originally found them. Much to my surprise, they still had them.

And they were cheaper than before!

Naturally, I bought a new pair. My old ones still have some life in them, so I’m not putting the new ones on just yet. I was tempted to buy two pair, and may indeed go back and grab another pair or two. I’ve decided to wear them sparingly, and not for the long walks to and from work. I’ve got to squeeze as much longevity out of these things as I can. I mean, who knows how long they’ll be around?

So what I’m wondering is this – am I the only person who thinks like this? Or does this? Do other people hoard their favorite consumable products, or am I just some kind of freak?
