Mmmmm….megapixels!

The ghettocam has been upstaged.

Out with the old:

and in with the new:

Yes, after all it’s faithful service, the trusty Kodak DC3200 has been pushed aside. The newcomer (picked up this past weekend in Tokyo – and a secondary reason for the trip) is the Casio Exlim EX-Z30.

And it’s hella sweet.

More modes than any camera I’ve owned before and tiny as all get out. It’d be a pain to photograph them side-by-side, so let’s just look at the numbers (measurements are in centimeters):

Kodak – 11.3w x 8.1d x 5.34h volume – 488.77 cubic cm.
Casio – 8.7w x 5.7d x 2.31 h volume – 114.55 cubic cm.

Yes, it’s that tiny. Even at that size, they managed to get a 2″ LCD on the back – which looks massive on a camera this small. Great for reviewing photos and lots of space for the menus. I won’t bore you with the rest of the specs. You can check them out at the above link if you’re so inclined. I will say that this thing seems to do it all – photos, movies and even audio recording. Full slate of manual controls, lots of presets for different shooting situations, and…shit, I’m doing it, aren’t I?

Oops.

Enough of that geeking out for now.So how are the pics? Well, I haven’t given it a proper testing yet, but here are some sample shots:

Low light mode. 4-second exposure. The blur is from me trying to hold the camera still for that long.

For comparison, the same shot in regular “automatic” mode.

Gratuitous cat photo. TuTu, looking rather demonic. (A comparison that is quite warranted sometimes.)I’m still getting a feel for the camera, and haven’t even been shooting at the full 3.2 megapixel resolution yet. Since it’s much more pocketable than the ghettocam, takes better pictures and has vastly superior battery life, I expect I’ll be taking more photos than ever. Of course, I’ll be sharing lots of them here.

Stay tuned! ^.^
