What price, pizza?

How much would you be willing to pay for a pizza?

If you’ve ever heard much of anything about Japan, you’ve probably heard that it’s really expensive. If you’ve heard about Japanese pizza, you’ve probably heard that they do all kinds of nasty stuff to it – squid ink, mayo, etc. This past weekend I had Japanese pizza for the first time. Now, I’m not sure how Japanese it was, since it was from Domino’s, but it was pizza and it was in Japan – so I guess that counts. We got (yes, I’m using a “we” – more on that later) a large pizza, half pepperoni and half teriyaki chicken, with pineapple added over the whole thing.

DAMN, was it good!

It take a fair bit to impress me with a pizza, but this one was sensational. The pepperoni side was pretty standard fare, but the chicken they used was every bit as good as any you’d get in a restaurant order of teriyaki chicken. There was also a large side order of tater tots. Why doesn’t Domino’s offer those in the U.S.? They were quite good and even came with enough ketchup for the lot. They made a rather good addition to the pizza. But how much did it all cost, you ask? A fair bit. I believe the bill was around ¥3,700, or about $35. Now, that is a rather large chunk of change for a pizza, and a hell of a lot more than I tend to pay for one in Korea, but I’d have to say it was worth every Yen.How does it rank on the “All-time Best Pizza” chart? It’s a very solid #2. #1 goes to the awesome double-decker pizza my sister and I got in Chicago a long, long time ago. That pizza was the stuff of legend.

So should you find yourself in Japan and hankering for pizza, I can suggest Domino’s with only one reservation – buy what you know! Don’t go crazy, or try to get a “Japanese style” pizza. Just go with the regular stuff you’re used to. Better yet, get the chicken teriyaki one and add pineapple. You won’t be disappointed. PS. Don’t forget to order the tater tots, and never mind the corn that they’ll put on the pizza. It’s “traditional.”
