Getting the word out

A brief look at one form of advertising in Korea.

One thing I’d always noticed but never taken too good a look at are these poster-boards. They’re all over Korea, so I guess there’s some tradition behind them or something. Billboards aren’t too common here, but these things are to your shoes what billboards are to you car. Right alongside where you’re traveling, easy to read and unlikely to be of any real value. Here’s one of the ones near my apartment:

This one always has movie ads on the right, and other stuff on the left. The movie posters are just smaller versions of what you’d see at a theater, but with the name of the cinema and the starting date for the advertised movie on the bottom. (Oh, looky! The Passion!

x.x

)The rest is a mixture of ads from nightclubs, English schools and other businesses. The movie info is good to have, but the rest of it doesn’t fulfill any needs I’ve got.

Until they bust out the weird posters.

Then I’m all for these things. Here’s one of my favorites:

I don’t know, and I don’t want to know. But wouldn’t this just make for a freaky t-shirt? Or how about an album cover for some alternative band? Everybody who sees this pic loves it – because it’s just so strange. Here’s another recent one that I got a kick out of:

No, I’ve not done anything to this one. It really says “There is No GOD.” And the Korean in white at the top? “From outer space all message”
Aliens tell us there is no God!

I showed this to a friend of mine and he said it was for the Raelians. I guess that makes sense, given the recent success Korean scientists have had in cloning human embryos.

I’m not sure what’s going on, but it seems that as each day goes by, my neighborhood just gets a little bit weirder.

Or maybe it’s just me…
