Sakura in Korea

They’re not just for Japan anymore!

First, my apologies for the following photograph. I took it from the subway train on Saturday, and the combination of filthy windows and dusty air didn’t do much to help the pic.

Yes, those grayish-white blobby things on the hillside are sakura – cherry blossoms for those who don’t know the Japanese name for them.

It’s not that I wouldn’t expect a tree so commonly associated with Japan to not bloom in Korea – but I’ll bet there are more than a few Koreans who wish exactly that. “You see those trees? They once came from Japan. They are ashamed of their evil past and out of a profound sense of shame, refuse to bloom when planted in the noble soil of Korea.”

Now that’s not a quote, but I’m sure being able to say that would do some hard-liners proud. But no matter where they’re from, they are pretty trees. Just thought I’d share.
