TV rots your brain

That’s why I download shows and watch them on my computer!

Of course, I’m using the video-out on my iBook to watch them on my TV, so I’m not sure if it counts as “watching TV” or not.

I went through another viewing marathon this weekend. I’ve found a good source for downloads and BitTorrent (along with a speedy net connection) makes it all possible. In the past week I’ve seen a lot of TV episodes (24 and Tripping the Rift) and some new movies (Kill Bill vol. 2, The Punisher, Dawn of the Dead).

I’ve raved about 24 before, so I won’t go into it again. But I will say that Season 3 is far better than Season 2. They’ve stuck Jack’s moronic daughter behind a desk and have kept her from getting herself into trouble. The plot’s much more solid this time around, and the writing has really tightened up. Good job!

Tripping the Rift is a mixed bag. It’s a CGI cartoon, currently running on the Sci-Fi Channel. The first episode was great. Geek humor galore and lots of sight gags and background jokes. Sadly, the other 3 I’ve seen don’t live up to it, going for cheap(er) laughs and crude(er) gags. I’ve got 4 more to watch, so I’m hoping there are a few more gems hiding in there somewhere.

KB2 and The Punisher were nothing special, but Dawn of the Dead blew my doors off. (Or, it would have, if I had doors to be blown off. If you like horror movies and aren’t afraid of seeing a bit (or a shitload) or gore, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

Seriously.

Okay, now that the Siskel & Ebert stuff is over, let’s get down to business.

I always tell people I don’t watch TV. But, do I? I mean, I watch stuff on my TV, and some of it is “TV shows,” but am I really “watching TV?” I suppose it’s all a matter of splitting hairs, but I’m still going to say no.

When I watch stuff, it’s done according to my schedule. I don’t have to plop down and wait for a show to come on, or make a point to be home at a certain time.

And I don’t have to watch a single damned commercial!

I just download the shows I want and watch ’em at my convenience. I can stop, start, pause and rewind as much as I like.Hey! It’s just like TiVo!

Except it’s better.

I don’t have to have a separate unit hooked up and set to record something. I don’t need to worry about whether or not I remembered to set it to record, or what’ll happen if a show gets delayed or pre-empted. Somebody out there in internet-land is going to get the show and get it online. Hell, probably more that one person is going to get it online.

All hail the internet!

Ahem.

Okay, so I’m watching TV shows, and usually watching them on a TV, but I don’t “watch TV.” I’ve got better things to do with my time than that.
