Japan invades America!

Well, an American cartoon, at any rate.

And, no, I’m not talking about Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh or any other such thing. Those are Japanese cartoons that invaded America. This is different.I’m talking about a tidbit of Japanese culture showing up in Futurama. (If you don’t know what Futurama is, then you’re missing out. Also, this entry won’t really make any sense to you.) Due to living overseas, I’ve missed tons of American TV. For the most part, that’s a good thing. When I went back to the US last spring, I had no idea what American Idol was. (Although I know what it is now, I still don’t give a crap.) But I’ve missed good stuff too. Lots of CSI, Law & Order, Simpsons and Futurama. Thanks to the magic of the internet (and the near-almighty BitTorrent network), I’ve been tracking some shows down.I went on a bit of a Futurama bender (pun intended) this weekend. I’d missed most of the 3rd and 4th seasons, so even though Fox cancelled the show –

in their infinite dumbness

– there are still new episodes for me to watch. One of them (season 4, episode 7, “Jurassic Bark”) was really good. The story was about what happened to Fry’s old dog when he got cryogenically frozen. (Fry, not his dog.)

Some of you may see where this is going already.

Yup, it was a Hachiko story. And it was nicely done, too. Still a fair bit of humor in the episode, but the bit about Fry’s dog was very well done. Emotional, but not sappy. One of the nicest pieces of storytelling I’ve seen on TV in a long time. If you haven’t seen it, download it. It’s worth the time it’ll take, and a great example of why the show should still be on the air.(Good job Fox.

Fucking idiots

(….mumble grumble…..)
