The right hedgehog is hard to find.

“What part of supersonic speed do you not understand?”

If you recognize the above quote, congratulations – you’re a geek! If you don’t, it’s from a Sega TV ad for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for Gamecube. (Click the link to view the ad, then come on back and keep reading.)

Back already?

It’s a pretty good ad. I still chuckle at it even though it’s been a few years since it came out. It’s the ad that got one of my friends wanting a pet hedgehog. He never got one though. I mean, where does one even buy a pet hedgehog?

Korea.

Tracey and I were in one of the big mega-marts tonight, and we wandered through the pet section. (She needed a vacation gift for her cat.) Instead of the usual mice, hamsters and rabbits, Home Plus tends to go a bit more exotic. Their “little animal” section had two to choose from – kangaroo rats (which look rather freakish) and hedgehogs.

The hedgehogs were really cool.

Not every supersonic, but entertaining nonetheless. The big one stayed balled up (charging for a spin attack, maybe?) but the little one was scurrying about a bit. I’m not sure what one does with a pet hedgehog. You certainly can’t pet it or take it out for walks. I guess maybe the whole point is to be able to say, “I have a pet hedgehog.”

Well, I don’t, but you can have one if you live in Korea – and have about $275 to spare.
