Geek shopping!

Is there anything better?

I was mucking around in Akihabara today and went into the Sofmap Mac Collection store to see what all they had. (I’ve been contemplating a second Mac to serve as kind of a downloading slave to keep my iBook free to roam about without interrupting anything that was coming down the pipe.) I looked around but nothing really caught my eye until I was leaving. I saw an ad for DVD burners in the elevator on my way down, so I went back up to the second floor to check out what they had. The Logitec 16x+-R got my attention. USB 2.0 and Firewire, 16x+-R, 4X+-RW and the biggie – 4x DVD-R dual layer!

Mmmmm, 8.5GB on a disc.

They wanted 24,760 ($225.09) for it, which I thought was reasonable, but I decided to head over to Bic Camera so I could get some points for the purchase. (If you’re not familiar with Japanese retail “points” systems, here’s how they work. Most everything in a store that uses one of these systems has a certain percentage value attached to it. Buy something and you get that percentage in points. Something costs 10,000 yen and has a 10% value? You get 1,000 points. One point equals one yen, and points can be spent just like cash. Pretty cool, eh?)

Almost the same price there – 24,801 ($225.46) – and I got 1,985 points. They also had 5 packs of Sony 4x DVD-Rs for 740, so I grabbed two of those with my points. Dual-layer media is still pricey, but it’s nice to have the functionality in the burner for when it drops a bit. I brought it home and hooked it up. Worked just like magic with Toast 6 (burning program). In no time at all I had my downloads of 24 (Season 3) backed up (12 on a disc, with room to spare – but it made sense to put the same number on each disc).

Bam! 8.2 gigs of hard drive space reclaimed just like that!

Now, what else can I backup and delete…

(I may have to go use the rest of my points to get more discs tomorrow. ^.^)

Oh, I did get one thing in Akihabara. There’s a used game shop I stop at every time I’m there – just to see what they’ve got. They had a bunch of old Super Famicom (Super NES, for those of you in the US) games in a bin for half off their marked price. Of course, they’re all in Japanese, and I don’t even have a Super Famicom, but that didn’t stop me from picking one up to use as a decoration in what’s fast becoming the “geek corner” of my room:

Come on, for $3, how could I not pick that up?
