How much is that doggy in the window?

A helluva lot more than you’d ever want to pay, that’s for sure!

I know some stuff is more expensive here in Japan, and that other things are a lot more expensive, but animals are just STUPIDLY expensive.I’ve seen pets for sale in a few different places (department stores and Tokyu Hands, mostly), and without fail, they tend to cost more than I’ve ever paid for anything in my entire life. For a comparison, we’ll use my new bed, an American style futon. I paid about $940 for it, which I thought was quite a lot, but given that I’ll spend about 1/3 of my time in Japan on it, it seemed reasonable. If I wanted to get a pet rabbit, that’d run me anywhere from 40 – 80% of the cost of my bed.

For a rabbit.

Want a dog? That’s anywhere from 100 – 500% the cost of my bed.Yes, that’s over $4,000 at the high end.

For a frickin’ dog!!!

I don’t know if these things are heroic dogs like Lassie, or robotic superdogs like Rush or something altogether different, but what the hell?!? What makes a dog worth $4,000? Or a rabbit worth over $500?

Clearly, I’m missing some crucial part of the equation here, and I’d really like to know what it is.

Can anybody help me out here?
