You look good enough to eat.

I swear, Japanese moms have way too much free time in the morning.

How else can you explain making a lunch like this?

Curry, rice, carrots and nori (dried seaweed), all dressed up to look like Anpanman.

Or how about this one?

Rice and nori – Kitty style!

There are magazines devoted to the art of making kids’ lunches cute. I’m sure the kids get a kick out of it, but I think there’s more to it than that for the moms. Sure, they make their kids happy, and that’s always nice. But you just know there are moms studying character food prep in order to be the coolest mom at the lunch table.

(Well, figuratively speaking. I doubt many moms go to school with their kids.)

I really have to find one of these magazines. Not that I want to know how to make my dinner curry look like Pikachu, but because I find this sort of parental competitiveness absolutely bizarre. If I manage to track one down, I’ll be sure to post pics and scans.

Stay tuned!
