Cool cat on the subway.

Okay, he wasn’t exactly “on” the subway, but he was hanging out outside the station.

A few weeks ago I went over to hang out at a friend’s place. Nothing to exciting, just a chilled out evening of movies and a few drinks. I’d been out shopping around and it was just a short train ride over to her neighborhood from Shinjuku. When I was leaving her station I saw this dude camped out at the top of the stairs:

I considered this a pretty rare sight.

Maybe it’s just me, but I get the impression that stray cats in Tokyo don’t hang out much. They seem rather skittish and take off if you get even remotely close to them. But not this one. He was chilling out at the entrance to a subway station, and wasn’t moving for anybody. I saw about 9-10 people have to step around him to enter or leave the station.

And the cat just didn’t care.

He had a serious “yeah I know you wanna walk here, but so what?” attitude about him. Heck, he wouldn’t even look at me so I could get a good photo of him. But that’s cool. He was clearly in some sort of zone, and it would’ve been rude to pull him out of it for the sake of a photo. He wasn’t there the next time I passed by the station, but I didn’t really expect him to be. You just know a cat like that’s got places to go and things to do.
