What price comfort?

About $60 a pair.

No, this isn’t another entry about ninja shoes.

This is about shorts.

You see, I’m allowed to wear shorts to work – which is great. But it seems no adults in Japan ever wear shorts, so they don’t sell them here – which is not so great. I’ve got two pairs of Old Navy cargo shorts that aren’t going to last much longer. The shorts themselves aren’t in that bad of shape, but the pockets have totally had it. I’ve patched them up numerous times, and they simply can’t be patched anymore.

And with the amount of stuff I’m prone to carrying around, that’s a problem.

Sure, I suppose I could carry less junk in my pockets, but I’d really rather not. So…I needed new shorts. But where does one look for shorts in a country that doesn’t consider them a valid clothing option?

The mall, of course!

I get a lot of my clothes here at UniQlo, but they seem to be anti-shorts as well. A real shame, as they sell great stuff at reasonable prices. I’d happily buy shorts from them – if only the sold them. Last night my boss suggested trying the Eddie Bauer store in Sunshine City, a big mall in Ikebukuro.

I headed over there today and was disappointed yet again. No shorts. Now, you’d think an outdoorsy-themed place like Eddie Bauer would have shorts, right? Nope. Lot’s of overpriced shirts, but no shorts to be found. As I was leaving EB, I spied a Columbia Sportswear store across the mall. Fuck it – worth a shot.

Oh, was it ever worth it!

Not a lot of selection, mind you, but they had shorts!!! I must’ve been grinning like an idiot when I saw they actually had some. My heart sank a little at the price tag ($60 a pair), but I really didn’t care. They had shorts, in a style I like – and in my size! I got three pairs – one tan, one grey and one black. I have a feeling I’ll be going back for a few spares once the weather really starts heating up.

I know my job’s not some thrill-a-minute gig, full of excitement and intrigue (not that many people’s jobs are), but perks like being comfortable in the summertime while everybody else is dying in a suit and tie do tend to balance things out rather nicely.
