Sweet, sweet temptation…

The danger of “10% off.”

Let me state up front that I do not need a new laptop. My iBook G4 is only a year and 3 months old. It’s still got nearly two years of warranty coverage left. It’s going to last quite a while. But all that means nothing when something like this may loom in the very near future:

You see, the last two times Apple has released an updated version of OS X, they had launch events at all their stores with nice discounts. Why do I bring this up?

The next OS launch is just two days away.

Yup, this Friday evening, OS X version 10.4 – named Tiger – is hitting the stores. The launch event will run from 6 PM to midnight, and if past trends continue, there will be a 10% discount at this one.

But I don’t need a new laptop.

Even so, after playing with a 15″ PowerBook recently, I really, really want one! The screen is considerably bigger than the one on my iBook. (It’s also a widescreen!) The hard drive is more than two-and-a-half times bigger. The CPU is almost twice as fast. The memory can be significantly upgraded. It’s got Bluetooth built-in. It’s got a DVI port (handy for hooking up to the HDMI socket on my projector). It looks better than my iBook. It’s got a wickedly-cool backlit keyboard for low-light situations (like my apartment when I’m simultaneously geeking out and watching downloaded shows).

That’s a shitload of reasons to upgrade right there.

And if that 10% off should happen to materialize, I just might be blogging from a new machine on Friday night…

Maybe. ^.^
