My cartoons confuse me.

Strange cases in voice casting.

Another note on Justice League.

But no bitching about that red & blue pansy.

So I’m sitting here watching another stack of episodes when some of the Green Lantern Corps show up. Nothing too special there, they are reoccurring players in a fair amount of DC Universe stuff. But it’s when Kilowog showed up that I had to stop for a second.

Who’s Kilowog?

This dude. His character model is kinda weird (as are nearly all of the characters on the show) but his voice is what caught me off guard. He’s voiced by Dennis Haysbert. That name may be familiar, especially if you’re a fan of 24.

Yup, it’s President Palmer.

Now, I’m cool with actors doing voice acting. Some of them come up with some great interpretations of the characters they’re voicing. For instance, Mark Hamill (yes, Luke Skywalker) does a great job with both the Joker and Solomon Grundy.

Because they sound nothing like his real voice.

Dennis, on the other hand, sounds just like himself. I suppose that may lend some sort of cachet or some such thing, but it really breaks the mood of the show. Instead of thinking, “hey, check it out – they put Kilowog in an episode,” I’m thinking, “okaaaaay. It’s President Palmer – only he’s pink, weird looking and wearing tights.”

Sure, cartoons aren’t high art (well, most of them aren’t), but they should at least get you to focus on the story and images instead of who’s doing the voices, right?

Or is it just me?
