Geeks and Cleaning

Not quite the enemies you may have thought they were.

Tonight I decided I’d take a break from my usual post-work geekery and do something productive:

Clean my apartment.

I know, I know – shock and horror! But it’s one of those things that’s got to be done, like it or not. Mostly just some dusting, but a bit more thorough scrubbing was needed around the stove and sink. I imagine most people think geeks live in dank basements surrounded by stacks of pizza boxes and empty soda cans. My apartment is nice and sunny and while I do enjoy pizza, I throw the boxes out the next day. Most of my soda comes in bottles these days (though I find myself drinking more coffee and juice than soda lately), which get rinsed out and recycled.

No, I’m not talking about somebody else’s life.

What makes geeks and cleaning get along rather well is that geeks tend to be obsessive. Once they start on something, no matter how mundane the task, things tend to get overdone. I don’t particularly like to dust, but damned if I didn’t just walk around my apartment looking for more stuff to dust once I got going. Heck, I’m on such a roll I may just iron a shirt for work tomorrow. “That’s great,” I hear you saying to yourself, “but why the big cleaning binge?” Simple.

I’ve got company coming to visit for a few days. ^.^
