We Love Katamari

Oh, hell yes we do!

The highly-anticipated (massive understatement) sequel to Katamari Damacy came out this month, and it’s everything I could’ve hoped for.

And much, much more.

The gameplay’s hardly changed. Ball is sticky. Push ball. Things stick to ball. Ball gets bigger. Bigger ball can pick up bigger things. If you’re not into games (or even if you are and never played KD) that probably sounds really dumb.

I assure you, it’s not.

KD is one of those ideas that you hear and say, “huh?!?” It makes no sense until you see it in motion, then you realize how genius it really is. The visuals are beyond trippy and the music is fantastic. Hell, they even got Dokaka to do a version of the theme for this one.

That’s right, Do-motherfucking-kaka!

I’ve been pushing his music on people for a couple years and was blown away to hear him doing a tune in this game. What he does is kind of silly (much like KD), but it’s really cool. I’m so psyched to see him getting high profile work like this.

He’s not the only cool sound in the game, though. Everything you pick up makes a different sound, and most of them are funny. Bosozoku make motorbike noises when you snag them, shop welcome mats chime out a happy “Irashaimasen!” when you pick them up and every animal has its appropriate squeal of panic.

Well, wouldn’t you be squealing if a giant sticky ball of random stuff had just added you to itself?

I could type a ton of stuff trying to describe just what it is that makes the KD games so great, but nothing can replace actually playing it to see why it’s so good. So that’s what you need to do. (Yes, I mean everybody.) Go play it. Even if you have to buy a PS2 to play it, it’s worth it.

It’s that damned good.
