My slave has issues

Have I been too rough on him?

I fear I may be driving my iMac into its grave. I’ve only had it for 8 months, but it’s really about 6 years old. It’s been doing its job well enough, handling the downloading duties quite admirably…

but I think it’s getting sick.

Several times recently I’ve gotten up in the morning to find that it’s turned itself off in the night. Then there are the lockups whenever anything’s plugged into one of the USB ports. (The other one works fine, though.)To be fair, I’ve probably been asking more of it than it was ever meant to do. I’m thankful for all it’s faithful service, but it’s time may be up.

All is not lost, however.

When I was in Akiba this weekend I stopped into the Sofmap Mac Collection shop (where I’d bought the G3) to see if the Mac Mini had had any effect on the price of iMac G4s.

Thankfully, it has.

I’ve always like the iMac G4. Easily one of the most elegant computer designs ever. I didn’t get one last fall since they were still more than I was willing to spend.

But that was then.

I saw a 15″ model with a 1Ghz G4, 256MB of memory, 80GB drive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM, wifi card and bluetooth for about $650. Sure, that’s more than the $350 I paid for the G3, but it’s a much more capable computer. It can sit in the same spot the G3 is in now, and it’ll actually take up less space.

And look better doing it.

I’m not kicking the G3 to the curb just yet. There’s a vacation in my near future and I don’t need to go buying new computers (even if they are used) and cutting into my travel budget. So I’m hoping it’ll hang on for a couple months longer. But it will be getting replaced.Which means it’ll need to find a new home.

Anybody out there interested in an old(er) iMac?
