Can fate be determined by a bottlecap?
If you believe some of my students, then yes, it can.
There’s a brand of juice here called Natchan. It’s pretty tasty stuff (especially the apple), and it’s got an interesting packaging design. On each bottle there are two big, emoticon-style faces on the label. There’s also a third one on the cap.
That’s the one we’re concerned with.
Since the labels have two faces on them, they can’t properly be used as divination tools. (Well, maybe if you worship Janus they could be.) For telling your future, the cap is where it’s at. There are four possible faces you can have on a cap:
Happy, sad, mischievous and upset.
According to my students, if you get a bottle of Natchan in the morning, the cap you get will determine the kind of day you’re going to have. It’s an odd little superstition, and one that only little kids could come up with. Surely the outcome of your day is up to you, and not the result of a random choice made in your morning convenience store shopping. Right?
Then why am I always checking my caps now?
