My family is growing…

Meet the newest member.

I’d said before going to Australia that my iMac was on its last legs – and soon to be replaced.

Today was “soon.”

I’d gone to Akiba to check out used iMac G4s at the Sofmap Mac store. They had some, but I was underwhelmed by the specs of the models they had. To get one anywhere near what I wanted I was going to have to drop about ¥100,000.

A bit more than I could really justify for a download slave.

While I was poking around the used section of the shop I came across an open-box deal (discounted, but still with the original one-year warranty) on a Mac mini. Hmmmmmm. I hadn’t considered the mini as an option, but once I saw the price and specs, I began to do just that. 1.42Ghz G4 processor, 256MB ram (kinda skimpy, but it’ll run Tiger and handle downloads with no problems), 80GB hard drive (niiiiice!). It was a first revision model, so it only had 256 instead of 512 for ram. Of course, to get a new 512 model it’d cost an extra ¥18,000.

Mmmmm. No thanks!

Sure, the mini doesn’t come with a keyboards, mouse or monitor, but I already had a mouse and my spiffy Bluetooth keyboard. All I had to do was pick up a monitor and a USB Bluetooth dongle and I’d be set. I found a decent 15″ LCD for ¥17,000, so I snapped that up as well. (Yes, you can get LCDs for as little as ¥9,000, but they’re bulky and ugly.)

A quick trip home, some reconfiguring of the network and the mini had a place in my home:

Not a bad day’s shopping, eh? ^.^
