Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Hacking

Yeah, you read that right.

It’s very rare that anything I read or watch has a direct, visible influence on my dreams, so when something like this comes along, it sticks in my mind.I finished the 6th Harry Potter book this week (thanks Mike’s mom!) on the way back from Australia, and I guess a lot of the imagery was lingering in my head.

How else could this dream have come about?

I don’t remember many of the specifics, but the dream took place at some weird, alternate version of Hogwarts. There was magic aplenty, but also lots of tech. Everybody had on wizarding robes and there was much wand-waving, but there were some key differences.

For one, the incantations were all in Leet.

(I’m not going to get into what “Leet” is, so click the link if you don’t know.)There were also courses in magical hacking being taught, like breaking firewalls with spells instead of programs. There was another class in which the students were learning phreaking, but instead of using electronic devices to generate tones into telephone receivers, the students were using weird little creatures which made the proper sounds depending on how you squeezed them. I’m sure there’s a twisted fanfic that could be wrought from all this, but fanfics aren’t really my thing.

Hell, this dream wasn’t really my thing.

I came out of it kind of slowly, my mind still working itself around some of the stuff that it had just seen (and created). Maybe the weirdest bit of all was my first conscious thought after I was fully awake. (And it formed it my head exactly as I’m going to type it.) That thought was:

d00d! WTF?!?
