I spent 3 hours on my bike.

And all I got was a lot of exercise.

Okay, that’s not entirely true. But at the
time I thought up the title for this post – it was. (What am I talking
about?)

An impulsive idea that
turned into a day-long
obsession.

In case you hadn’t
heard, Apple released a new iPod this week – the iPod
nano
. It’s an unbelievably slick piece of tech. Smaller than it has
any right to be and astonishingly cool. I saw them online on Thursday and
thought, “damn, that’s
nice.”

But I’ve already got an
iPod.

Yes, I do. A 3rd generation
10GB model. It still works fine and I’ve got no real issues with
it.

But damn if that nano isn’t
nice…

I had to go to Bic Camera
today to pick up a wireless card for the new teacher at work, and to grab a
trackball for my Mac mini. while I was in the store, I wandered over to the MP3
player section to check out the nano in
person.

Sweet
Jeebus!

It was smaller than I’d
expected, but the color screen was just too cool. And it still pumped out the
tunes every bit as loud as my “big” iPod
did.

I had to have
one.

They come in two capacities –
2GB and 4GB. Naturally, I wanted the 4GB version. I asked the sales guy for one,
but they were sold out. So I went to two other Bic locations in Ikebukuro. They
were sold out as well. Just a block away was a Sakuraya, so I checked them out.
Nope, no 4GB
nanos.

Shit.

I
was about to pack it in and bike home, but my techno-lust had been kicked into
high gear.

I had to find
one!

So I biked down to Akihabara
to try my luck there. Surely there would be some 4GB nanos
there!

Hah!

Kakuta
Sofmap, Azo Bit City and the Sofmap Mac Collection only had the 2GB
models.

Hey, Ginza’s not that far away,
I’ll just bike down there and get one from the Apple
store!

Double
hah!

They also had only 2GB models.
Crap.

I figured I was pretty much out
of luck, so I pulled out my map and plotted my route home. I decided to take a
different path than normal, since it would take me through the neighborhood I’m
hoping to move into. (Useful, since I could find out how long it’d take to bike
from there to work.)

A few miles from
my place there’s a (fairly ghettofied) electronics store called Kojima Denki. I
was going to pass right by it on the way home, so I figured it couldn’t really
hurt to stop in and see if they had
any.

Good
call.

As I walked up to their MP3
section one of the sales guys was just hanging up the poster for the nano – two
days after they’d been released! (See what I mean by ghettofied?) I asked him if
they had any 4GB models and he went off to check. I wasn’t sure what they’d have
since they hadn’t even put up any demo units
yet.

But luck was with
me!

It took him a few minutes – I
assume because he had to find the box they were in – but he did come up with a
4GB
nano.

w00t!!!

I
promptly paid for it and took it home. I haven’t filled it up with tunes yet, as
I’m being a bit picky and just starting off with the stuff I know I’ll listen to
a lot. There’s only one quibble I can find with the nano. And that’s that you
can’t transfer data via firewire (but it will charge that way). Weird, but not a
big deal.

And I’ve already found a
buyer for my old iPod, so today’s lust won’t carry such a high price
tag.

Now, if you’ll excuse me,
I’ve got playlists to put together.
