I’d almost forgotten what vandalism looked like.


One thing you don’t get much of in Tokyo is graffiti. Yeah, there are little bits of it here and there, but nothing on the scale of what you get in Western countries. (Too bad, really. I bet Japanese taggers could come up with some mad-creative stuff.)

Australia, on the other hand, is rather well tagged.

No train shall be spared!

And the buildings next to the tracks get their fair share as well:

All 4 of those pics were taken during about 5 minutes of a train ride from downtown Sydney to the western suburb of Paramatta. And there was a lot of other tagged stuff I saw, but didn’t shoot.

It’s not all vandalism though.

Across the street from my hotel was a wall somebody had obviously commissioned:

I know a lot of people think graffiti is just mindless defacement, but I disagree. Yes, some of it is that, but there’s some wicked cool art out there as well.

And that’s the stuff I want to see more of.
