Oh, Xbox 360…

…why are you so unloved?

Okay, maybe not in the US, where you’re still in short supply. (Though not that short apparently, since eBay prices for you have been falling steadily.) And I’ve heard you’re selling pretty well in the EU, too.

But here in Japan…

This is something I’d been meaning to comment on for a while, pretty much since getting my 360.

And since nobody else in Japan has been getting one.

I think MS has sold maybe half of the units shipped to Japan, if they’re lucky. And that’s even after being on store shelves for nearly 4 weeks! Used systems were in stores TWO DAYS after the system launched.

How sad is that?!?

You can see used 360s (and games) in nearly every shop in Akiba (and in game shops elsewhere – this pic was taken at Trader in Shinjuku). Not only that, the prices on the used games are lower and lower every time I see them. It’s almost to the point where it’s cheaper to buy used than to get games new and use your points card. (Note: When you buy games at Bic or Yodobashi you can get 10-12% of the price back in store credit. Used games aren’t quite at the “new – 10-12%” level, but they’re getting there fast.)Anyway, I was going to do up a post about the reasons why the 360’s not selling well here.

But somebody already beat me to it.

And did a great job of it. I really can’t think of anything I’d add to the post, so head on over to 4 color rebellion and check out what Vinnk has to say about The Xbox 360 and Japanese Nationalism.
