Geek out on the train, if you like.

Just not too hard.

Having exhausted my current supply of books (aside from some technical “how to” ones and a biography of Pol Pot) I’ve turned to gaming to occupy my morning commute. I don’t know why I haven’t done this more. Probably because I was really into the books I’d been reading.

Nothing wrong with that.

But I’ve run through all my books, and wasn’t keen on buying another stack just yet. And I do have a lot of unfinished games.

So…DS Ahoy! ^.^

I’ve been playing some Made in Wario (fun collection of micro-sized games), which is great for those times when you just need a quick fix, but found myself wanting something a bit meatier.

Like an RPG.

I picked up a copy of Sword of Mana when I was in Australia last summer but never got too far with it. Most likely because my home console games and the big screen made the little screen of the DS seem a bit irrelevant.

Not so on the train!

The DS really shines as a portable system. (Duh!) Compact, rugged, versatile and it’s got a library of games that’s hard to top. Especially when you add in all the GBA games it can run. (SoM is a GBA title.) I’ve got a newfound appreciation for the system, and have really been getting into SoM during my morning train rides.

A bit TOO into it, it would seem.

I was working my way through a particularly tricky maze this morning, when I looked up from the system and got quite a shock.

I had no idea where I was!

I’d been so engrossed in what I was doing in the game that the real world kind of fell away.

I’d overshot my station by about 5 stops! Oops!!

I hurriedly stuffed the DS in my backpack and made a mad dash for the platform of the Tokyo-bound train. I just missed one, but thanks to the morning rush, another was close behind. It seemed to take forever to get back to my station (moreso because I didn’t dare try gaming to pass the time), but I did make it back in time to get the next bus to work.I wasn’t late, but I was damned close to it, walking in the door 3 minutes ahead of my start time. Instead of my usual 20-25.

It’s good to know I’ve got enough leeway in my commute to handle a mistake like this, but I prefer to get to work a little early to ensure all my stuff is in order for the day’s lessons. I do not want to make a habit of cutting things that close.

So, new rule – no more RPGs on the train!
