Mobile Homeless

Human Tortoise? Budget RV?

I spotted this creation while heading out to run errands this week. There are plenty of homeless people around Asakusa (I’m not sure why, but there are), and most of them seem to live in blue tarp tents along the Sumida river. Some of them seem to have pretty elaborate “houses” and they certainly seem better than sleeping over a steam grate.

Not that it’s as good as having a proper home, but they could be in worse shape, for sure.

This one was a whole new deal though. I’ve seen many of the homeless guys moving their stuff around on carts (they seem to have a lot of stuff for not having any place to keep it), but never before had I seen one of them put their home on the cart.

But I guess it makes a kind of sense.

Every so often the Sumida-ku and Taito-ku (the two wards the Sumida river runs between) high muckety-mucks chase all the homeless away, usually when there’s some big goings-on like the summer fireworks show. When that happens, the homeless guys have to take down their tents, pack everything onto a cart and roll away somewhere else for a while.

I guess this guy’s just planning ahead.

It may not be the roomiest place to live, but with four walls and a roof – and not having to tear down your home and rebuild it every time the ward office tells you to shove off – it’s not a bad idea.
