90 is a pretty happy number.

Go ahead, ask me why.

“Why, Drew? Why is 90 such a happy number?”

Well, taken on its own, I suppose there’s not much special about it. It’s a fairly impressive age to live to. Or a decent DVD collection.

In computer terms it’s not that impressive if we’re talking gigabytes of drive space. But it would make for one long buddy list. it’s far too many icons to have on one’s desktop. It’s enough keys for a laptop keyboard, but not nearly enough for a desktop one.

Money-wise it’d be too many bills to put in one’s wallet (if we’re talking dollars and singles). And if it were in dollars it’d be a hell of an hourly wage. (Not a bad daily one, either, if we’re talking about mundane jobs like retail.)

But I’m not referring to any of those things here.

What am I talking about?

Kilograms:

For those of you dealing with pounds, it’s about 198.4. A bit heavy for most people I’d wager, and the number’s still a bit higher than what I want to see when I step on the scale.

But it’s a much better number than 100!

Which is what I saw on my scale 67 days ago.

Yup, I dropped 10 kilos in just over 2 months. ^.^

Seeing the number 100, really threw me. In the past I’ve always been able to rationalize my weight gain with nonsense like:

“It’s okay, I’m still under 200 pounds.”

(And after going metric.)

“95 kilos isn’t so bad. That’s still less than 210.”

“99? Well, at least it’s not 100. Double digits is still okay.”

But when I saw 100 on my scale?

That’s just fat! (And lazy, and any number of other words I can think of.)

Clearly, steps had to be taken. I gave up all junk food for over a month-and-a-half. I only drank beer on Fridays and Saturdays, and then only 3-5 cans each night. (Okay, sometimes a few more. ^.^) I started eating a lot healthier, and cooking more. I ditched all fast food – but onigiri (rice balls) don’t count, as they’re pretty healthy. I found a place near work that makes phenomenal salads, and made it a habit to get one once or twice a week.

And I got off my ass!

Not so much TV and game time. Did more exercising. Started getting off the train one station before my stop on the way home to get more walking in. It all helped.

But 90 isn’t the number I’m shooting for.

I’d set myself the goal of losing 10 kilos by September, and I’ve clearly reached that goal. My longer-term goal was to drop 15 by the end of the year, but I think I’ll probably be able to do that before October.

I’m not going weight loss crazy though. I still eat a decent amount of food, and I’ve added a little bit of junk to my weekend eating (nothing excessive, though). 85 kilos is a decent weight for me, and I’ll be happy once I reach it. I may drop slightly below that, as I don’t want to see 85.anything when I get on the scale. A margin of 1-2 extra kilos is enough.

Now, the trick will be celebrating this milestone without gorging on junkfood. ^.^
