“Hi sexy”

Now, I don’t mind the occasional complement, but this was just weird.

As I mentioned in my post on the 8th of this month, I’ve started playing World of Warcraft. (If you don’t know what that is, it’s an MMORPG – Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game – and considered by most everybody to be the best game of that type. It’s a whole virtual world filled with characters created and run by the game, and also with real people playing their own characters. I’ve enjoyed my time in it so far, and even gotten the occasional laugh out of it.

I was finishing up an evening’s gaming two nights ago when a female character walked up to my character and said, “Hi sexy.”

This is weird for several reasons.

1. I don’t konw who this person is. Not a clue. Never chatted with anybody in the game before and nobody I know in real life plays WoW.

2. I don’t even know if this person is a chick. Sure, the avator on the screen was female, but how can you know if the person running that character is female? Answer: you can’t.

3. What’s the point of chatting up somebody like this? It’s not like we’re gonna date or anything. And my character is so low-level, “she” couldn’t have really expected me to help her out with money or equipment. (You can see every character’s level just by putting your mouse cursor over them, so “she” had to know I was new to the game.)

And to top it all off, she spit on me!

I responded to her initial comment with a simple “hello.” She then wanted to know how I was. I was honest and said, “sleepy.” In WoW, like many MMOs, there are emotes and scripted animations you can make your character execute so that they’ll do more than just stand there. I only know a couple of them so far, but just to see what would happen, I typed in “/sleep”.

And it worked!

My dude, laid down on the ground and started snoozing away. I though this was funny (as did M, whom I’d called over to show her what was going on in the game), but the flirty-girl did not. The next thing to come up in the chat area of the screen was “so-and-so spits on you.”

Charming.

But this hasn’t put me off the game. If anything, it’s shown me there is potential for having fun outside the “normal” confines of the gameplay.

Now I just have to learn more of these emotes. ^.^
